Review

Spin (p.112) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[W]hen they work up a good buzz and growl or hit a scrumptious riff, Mogwai still take your breath away."
Alternative Press (p.160) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A] study in timbral counterpoint, where themes are built and torn down and built again perpetually in a circular swirl-catapulting from the void up to the heavens and back again."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.51) - "[R]ich textures reveal themselves anew with every listen. Few bands write this many great songs in a career, let alone on one, sole album."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.61) - Ranked #13 in Kerrang's Best Albums Of The Year 2008 -- "[T]hey broadened the horizons of their already expansive sound into something truly breathtaking..."
Mojo (Publisher) (p.102) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "THE HAWK IS HOWLING finds Glasgow's guitar army relaxing the taut, economical songcraft of its 2006 predecessor, MR. BEAST, and setting a new standard for irreverent track titles."
Clash (magazine) (p.115) - "Refining their sound without losing their passion for noise, the Scots post rock troupe have lost none of their vicious charm."
Record Collector (magazine) (pp.92-93) - 5 stars out of 5 -- "The release of the band's sixth studio album sees the Glasgow quintet surpass themselves, not only on the musical side of things, but on the song title front too."

Title Note

Audio Mixer: Gareth Jones.

On 2008's THE HAWK IS HOWLING, Mogwai simultaneously returns to late-1990s form and showcases the best of its post-millennial innovations, easily making it one of the Scottish art-rock ensemble's most dynamic outings. Reuniting with producer Andy Miller, who worked on the group's formative TEN RAPID compilation ('97), Mogwai manages to recapture some of the immediacy of those recordings, while still drifting into its gentle latter-day melodicism on certain tracks.

HAWK's most stunning song is "Batcat," a crushingly heavy number that makes Black Sabbath's "Supernaut" looks positively poppy, with Mogwai's trio of six-stringers unleashing snarling guitar lines of pure dread. "The Sun Smells Too Loud" inhabits the other end of the band's sonic spectrum, offering up shimmering atmospherics that could effectively accompany solar orbit. While these two tunes alone are worth the price of admission, THE HAWK IS HOWLING is filled out with intriguing instrumental moments that fall somewhere in between (see the slowly building "I Love You, I'm Going to Blow Up Your School"), resulting in an eclectic and thoroughly rewarding post-rock album.
