Coleman Hawkins Artist Snapshot:

Coleman Hawkins was the first great tenor saxophonist, one of those who did the most to establish that instrument's role in jazz. When he joined the Fletcher Henderson band in 1924, Hawkins's smooth legato and powerful sense of swing, combined with an unusually broad knowledge of harmony and theory, quickly made him the dominant tenor man of the time. His return in 1939 from a long period in Europe was capped by a record date that included a watershed version of "Body and Soul." One of the few older musicians to embrace the intricacies of bebop, Hawkins continually challenged himself throughout a long and illustrious career.

Review

Down Beat (p.75) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e does what he does best, plying his husky, breathy tone with unhurried insistence and leaving his compatriots -- a stellar septet hand-picked for his sole turn as leader under Orrin Keepnews' watch -- room to rise to his standard."

Recording information: Fantasy.

Although Coleman Hawkins was 51 when THE HAWK FLIES HIGH was recorded in 1957, he hadn't lost any of the vigor or imaginative dexterity that had typified his original work in the `30s and `40s. In fact, one of Hawkins's greatest assets was his ability to adapt to and incorporate changing styles, and that's precisely what he does here by bringing his swing-inflected chops into a straight bop context. Surrounded by then-young firebrands J.J. Johnson and Idrees Sulieman (on trombone and trumpet, respectively), Hawkins turns in memorable performances on album highlights such as "Juicy Fruit," "Laura," and "Sanctity." The disc was remastered and reissued in 2008.
