Jonathan Richman Artist Snapshot:

In his early-1970s days with the Modern Lovers, Jonathan Richman was a proto-punk who railed against the hippie drug culture. His subsequent solo career found him toning down his hard-edged sound for a more fun-loving, light-hearted approach and solidifying his image as the quintessential man-child, the irresistible Mr. Rogers of rock & roll.

Review

Entertainment Weekly (1/10/92, p.70) - B - "...one of his most clear-eyed and least coy records..."

Title Note

Just Jonathan Richman and his guitar (along with some handclaps, maybe) is, indeed, all that's needed to have a party. Differing very little from his "band" albums (which often add only two more players), this is not merely a mellowed-out Jonathan Unplugged, but rather a true rock 'n roll album. Included are songs about fun, songs about remembering, and a home run of boasting in "My Career As a Homewrecker" (striking a pose that's part of a tradition that runs from delta blues right up through rap). A couple live tracks are mixed in seamlessly, as is his "1963," a spoken-word piece which rhythmically doesn't stray too far from his songs. Richman never really breaks new ground, but instead continues to celebrate the joyous corner of the landscape he's called home since he first strapped on a guitar.
