Review

Alternative Press (p.150) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "With a nod to Depeche Mode's melodic gifts, Marilyn Manson's vocal style and the underground pulsings of such electronic 'death-pop' stylists as VNV Nation and Apoptygma Berzerk, Francis has created a disc that leaves his punk trappings behind for goth-club immersion."
Kerrang (Magazine) (p.53) - "It's surprisingly artful and haunting -- when WC paints his mournful drone over the brooding atmospherics of 'Cemetery' or the title-track it really is rather chilling."

Title Note

Composer/Lyricist: William Control.

Personnel: William Control (vocals); Shanine Xavier Yngvason, Brit Asema (background vocals).

Additional personnel: Juliana Bicknell (vocals).

Audio Mixers: Justin Armstrong; William Control.

Recording information: Robert Lang Studio, Seattle, WA (2008).

William Control's day job as singer for Seattle post-hardcore band Aiden gives him plenty of room for emotional histrionics, but the songs on HATE CULTURE represent a whole new shade of black. Adopting an ice-cold synth-pop sound straight out of 1981, Control dishes dramatic, overwrought lyrics in a somewhat robotic cadence. Still, they detail a catalogue of dysfunction and outright pain that shudders right through the frigid delivery. "Razor's Edge" is severe and remote, synths bubbling up through a curtain of high-pitched electronic wailing, and "The Whipping Haus" flirts with S & M imagery.
