Annotation

Sam Inglis dissects Neil Young's seminal HARVEST, "the only Neil Young album that has found its way into the record collections of people who don't have record collections," in another of Continuum's 33 1/3 series of mini-book-length album studies. HARVEST has a checkered history with purists, who see it as too middle-of-the-road, though Inglis notes that Young himself virtually remade the album as 1992's HARVEST MOON, coming full circle in a career that has seen the artist recreate himself as both an arch-conservative and a prophet of punk rock. Inglis's setting of the album in its historical context after Young's split from CSNY, his perceptive and detail-packed description of its recording, and his informed analysis of its production make fascinating reading. Far from being the sellout commercial record Young's detractors suggest, Inglis shows that HARVEST was a fortuitous collision of art and commerce--the artist followed his muse, and the public followed suit. With track-by-track rundowns of the album's songs, brief where-are-they-now histories of its participants, and a useful discourse on the merits of different format CD reissues (Inglis is an editor of the British recording magazine Sound On Sound), HARVEST is an exemplary exposition of a landmark Neil Young release.
