Legendary American composer Lou Harrison finds inspiration everywhere--Cantonese operas, African drums, Gregorian chants, and junkyards each contribute to his muse. His varied career has yielded a remarkable body of work, a portion of which is profiled in this recording.

The strains of the solo cello in 'Prelude' show the composer's inclination toward Eastern styles, modified with a jazz-like beat. 'Allegro' features an almost Arabic march, while 'Scherzo' is a southern African-style exploration of the cello's percussive possibilities. The more elaborately arranged pieces are also remarkable for their simplicity. 'In Honor of Prince Kantemir' is a procession in the spirit of 'Bolero,' while 'Round Dance' is distinctly modern and--like this album--a distinct pleasure.
