Review

The Wire (p.58) - "[Shipp's playing] has a brusque, happy-go-lucky quality, like his aim is to grab ideas and freeze them in time before they go off the boil."
JazzTimes (p.79) - "'GNG' begins the album with a head-solo-head structure that has a loose boppish feel to it....Shipp again has shown his vast command of his instrument's history, which he filters through his sharp perspective."
Signal To Noise (magazine) (p.67) - "Like many of Shipp's best recordings, this one conveys a laid-back athleticism....As usual, Dickey is a nimble responder, dodging Shipp's rhythmic gestures as much as engaging with them."

Title Note

Recording information: Systems Two, Brooklyn, NY.

Pianist Matthew Shipp is often identified with the New York City avant-garde jazz scene of the 1990s and beyond. But he's also strongly influenced by the classic jazz piano tradition (Bill Evans, Herbie Hancock, etc.), hip-hop, and cutting-edge indie rock. HARMONIC DISORDER is Shipp exploring and re-imagining the piano trio format with drummer Whit Dickey and bassist Joe Morris (the latter is also established as a free jazz guitarist). DISORDER is richly varied--from elegant takes on standards to volatile upsurges to lyrical abstractions--all driven by Shipp's remarkable technique and imagination.
