Solo performer: Sven Vath (various instruments).
From the gorgeous, 3D computer graphics of the triple-fold CD digipak to the whirligig sounds enclosed within, THE HARLEQUIN is one of Sven Vath's early masterpieces, a mesmerizing head trip into the hallucinatory world of trance and psychedelic ambient music. Vath and partner Ralf Hildenbeutel (also a master of the form) build galvanizing canvases of beats and arcane rhythms, layering liquid-nitrogen sequencers, spitting hi-hats, and myriad washes of pastel electronics on top.
"Harlequin Plays Bells" coats shifting electronics in a sheen of gauzy chimes, while "Harlequin--The Beauty and the Beast" sees the duo attacking the dancefloor with gusto, building wave upon intense wave of shuddering rhythms into a sweaty crescendo. But Vath and Ralf aren't completely absorbed into the techno-trance collective--tracks such as the proto-Kraftwerk electro of "Robot" and the sci-fi electronics of "The Birth of Robby" are the sonic equivalent of an Isaac Asimov novel. Fairly amazing.
