Annotation

Drummer Art Blakey's Jazz Messengers was a kind of hothouse for generations of successful jazz musicians, from Freddie Hubbard to Wynton Marsalis. While Blakey has been the subject of countless articles and a couple of biographies, he has rarely been glimpsed through the eyes of those who shared a bandstand with him--his sidemen. Bassist and writer Alan Goldsher corrects this oversight with a collection of fascinating interviews with trumpeters, pianists, saxophonists, and bass players who were all given their first taste of the big time in what tenor saxophonist Javon Jackson calls "the Harvard University of jazz." In a collection of interwoven chapters that feature musicians commenting on their fellow Blakey alumni, Goldsher interviews Terence Blanchard and Chuck Mangione on trumpeter Kenny Dorham, and there are quotes from the bandleader himself on Keith Jarrett's rocky year in his employ. Pianist Mulgrew Miller contributes some valuable insights on the keyboard talents of Cedar Walton, while being praised in his turn by Benny Green, who played piano with Blakey in the 1980s. A fine introduction both to Blakey's sidemen and to the world of jazz, HARD BOP ACADEMY brims with the enthusiasm of its writer and of his interviewees.
