HAPPY FATHER'S DAY, released a couple months before 2008's holiday, is the second collaboration between smoothly neurotic superstar Lil Wayne and his adoptive father, Birdman. The attitude throughout is that of a casual mixtape or a drunken New Orleans barbecue. The production is mostly sparse and often inventive ("Burn This City" samples Franz Ferdinand through a purple haze). Wayne's flows languidly pop in with their usual mix of the raw choruses and attention-grabbing moments of absurd wit, while Birdman's growl bowls over everything in its path. HAPPY FATHER'S DAY is a sleek collaboration between two MCs who care a great deal for one another.
