Hank Williams Jr. Artist Snapshot:

Hank Williams Jr. spent years trying to duplicate his famous father's sound. But his greatest success came when he shook off that weighty mantle. Williams's new sound integrated country and southern rock, a formula that made him one of country's biggest stars of the 1980s. Down the line, he proved to be influential to a new generation of rebels like Kid Rock and Uncle Kracker.

Review

No Depression (11-12/00, pp.104-5) - "...A country music milestone....peppered with passion, insight, wonder and humor in all the right places..."

Title Note

Personnel includes: Hank Williams, Jr. (vocals, guitar); Jerry Wallace (acoustic guitar); Gary Boggs, Dicky Overby, Toy Caldwell (steel guitar); Charlie Daniels (fiddle); Chuck Leavell (organ); Ronnie Oldham (keyboards); Roger Clark (drums); Sue Richards, Ava Aldridge (background vocals).

Originally released on MGM (M3G-5009).

This is where Hank Williams Jr. solidified the hard-hitting style he would become known for, perhaps inspired by the pioneering outlaw country records Willie Nelson and Waylon Jennings had begun making a couple of years earlier. Charlie Daniels and the Marshall Tucker Band's Toy Caldwell help out here, and you can hear Williams's trademark mix of country and Southern rock taking shape on his cover of the Tucker Band's classic "Can't You See." And while he was no longer singing in his father's shadow, he continues to reference the late country icon on songs like "Living Proof," though the mode of expression is now undeniably the younger Williams's own. HANK WILLIAMS JR. & FRIENDS created the template that would be followed on a subsequent string of Williams's most enduring albums.
