In Paul Bley's large catalog, which spans nearly half a century, there are numerous fine recordings of his solo piano work. From the crystalline beauty of OPEN, TO LOVE to the more fractured (but no less compelling) AXIS, he has explored, both as a player and as a composer, the possibilities of musical expression. HANDS ON is a 1993 recording of seven Bley originals. Beautifully recorded by Tom Mark (who regularly works with Jack DeJohnette, Carla Bley, Steve Swallow and others), the music moves from the aching balladry of "Remembering" to the playful bass-line ramble of the title song and the humor of "Cowhand." Anyone unfamiliar with Bley's work, either solo or in various ensemble settings, would do well to start with either this or one of the above mentioned titles.
