Baroque specialists Paul McCreesh and the Gabrieli Consort and Players team up with an all-star cast of early-music singers here for one of Handel's greatest oratorios. Drawing on the Old Testament stories of King Solomon, Handel provided a work which celebrated peace rather than conflict, and which reflected the politics and current events of 1740s Great Britain.
Given the musical richness of 'Solomon,' it is somewhat surprising that no other complete recording has been made. McCreesh's efforts are all the more welcome in light of that fact. Great pains were taken to attempt to recreate Handel's original version of the score and eliminate later additions and revisions by others. The instrumental ensemble is well-balanced with the double chorus, and the sound from both is excellent. McCreesh's cast of soloists could hardly be bettered: Andreas Scholl may be the recording's headliner, but the cast is uniformly strong and serve to make this an indispensable set.
