Guy were one of the first and best of the New Jack Swing groups of the late 1980s and early '90s. Led by R&B producer/songwriter extraordinaire Teddy Riley, Guy combined the silky vocals and smooth grooves of classic loverman R&B with the beats and finesse of hip-hop, a genre that had just begun to find mainstream acceptance when Guy appeared on the scene. The group's self-titled debut is a classic, and though they released only two more albums (the second of which, GUY III was a reunion album released in 2000), they are a key group in the ongoing evolution of R&B and urban pop. Riley would go on to find success producing a veritable Who's Who of the R&B world, and also formed the slightly harder-edged R&B act Blackstreet in the early 1990s.
