Major Lazer is the late-'00s digital reggae/dancehall project of Diplo and Switch, two globetrotting, tastemaking DJ/producers whose previous collaborations notably included production work for M.I.A. and Santigold. While skepticism initially (and understandably) greeted the project, the Tuff Gong studio imprint and the duo's over-apparent and genuine enthusiasm transcended any note of dilettantism. And a goofy invented back-story about a renegade Jamaican commando with prosthetic lazer arms who was allegedly a Zombie War veteran and vampire-fighting C.I.A. operative (but was demonstrably a rampant Twitter user) and frenetic singles like "Hold the Line," cemented their rep.
