Publisher's note

An effervescent debut novel about living the American dream . . . in reverse.
Light streams through the generous windows as the espresso machine roars. A gorgeous, rich scent fills the air. Witty conversation unspools over the porcelain cups, and leisurely wellbeing abounds.

That's the cafe dream. Mark and Nina are about to experience the reality. Aspiring intellectuals, they are determined to abandon their dull careers and re-create the perfect Viennese coffeehouse on New York's gritty but hip Lower East Side. Armed with lots of attitude, zero common sense, and the world's most expensive espresso machine, they descend on the neighborhood to educate the locals on authentic cafe culture. What follows is a brutal and hilarious downward spiral that will strip Mark and Nina of money, friends, sex life, status, shelter, and finally, sanity--and offer salvation through something they had never experienced: failure.
Inspired by the author's own coffeehouse hell, "Ground Up "is a smart and funny portrait of a New York in the constant act of reinventing itself, and a surprisingly tender story of falling out of love and back into it.

Abandoning their unfulfilling careers to create what they hope will be a perfect Viennese coffeehouse on New York's lower east side, intellectuals Mark and Nina find their attitudes and questionable common sense resulting in a haphazard downward spiral that strips them of everything they once counted on. Original. A first novel.

Annotation

Debut novelist Michael Idov displays his entrepreneurial resiliency by transforming his disastrous real-life attempt to start a trendy New York coffee shop into this hysterical and resourceful book, which should mark the beginning of a more successful career as a writer. A young couple named Mark and Nina are overeducated and under-employed--he writes the occasional scathing book review, and she has just left her soul-sucking position as a lawyer to try to become a photographer. Almost on a whim, they decide that what New York's Lower East Side really needs is another hip coffee shop, and the momentum of their combined optimism for the venture, along with Nina's trust fund, gets them up and running. Unfortunately, instead of their dreams of quaint percolations and sophisticated sips of espresso, they get a huge, scalding cup of reality, in the form of stubborn landlords, petty contractors, stingy suppliers, unreliable employees, and a brand new franchise coffee shop right across the street.
