Review

Spin (11/93, p.137) - Highly Recommended - "...The Ass Ponys swing and choogle and reel and rock, and their voices soar with such a happy plaint that it makes you think maybe Ohio River water isn't that bad after all..."

Title Note

The second album by this Cincinnati foursome, after 1990's difficult-to-locate MR. SUPERLOVE, was released twice by OKra in 1992 and, following that label's demise, again by Safe House in 1993. In both cases, GRIM is an odd melange of folk-rock, British Invasion-inspired pop, lo-fi sonic experiments and country twang.

Singer/guitarist Chuck Cleaver sets his off-kilter lyrics and unique voice in attractive settings colored by John Erhardt's pedal steel and slide guitar, supported comfortably by Randy Cheek's melodic bass and Dave Morrison's restrained drumming, making songs like "Not Since Superman Died" and "Dirty Backseat Car Thing" both appealingly odd and invitingly familiar. Had the Ass Ponys appeared only five years later, they would have been hailed as alt-country geniuses, but unfortunately, they were a bit ahead of their time. Point of potential discographical confusion: the song "Grim" does not appear on this album, but on 1994's Electric Rock Music.
