The Piano Concertos of Robert Schumann and Edvard Grieg are very demanding of the soloist, comprising music of epic heroism typical of the 19th century. Radu Lupu more than rises to the occasion. His smoldering technique kindles an intensely poetic reading of Schumann. Lupu bravely commands the orchestra in the thrilling opening of the Grieg, but maintains the grace and subtlety to defer during the Adagio. It is a terrific performance, superbly accompanied by Andre Previn and the London Symphony Orchestra.

This recording was made in 1973 and sounds fantastic. This is partially because it has been so carefully remastered, but it is mostly because Decca's engineers did such a good job recording it in the first place.

The technical recording specifications in the liner notes illustrate this, and are an entertaining inclusion.
