One of the great "secrets revealed" of contemporary American gospel music was the revelation that the steel guitar--usually associated with country music--played a role in African-American church music. An extremely expressive instrument, steel guitar can produce vocal-sounding wails as well as shattering shards of sound. There are echoes of electric blues and even aspects of rock & roll lurking within sacred steel, but then one should remember that blues and rock (and jazz) share roots in gospel music. This compilation presents an exhilarating cross-section of some of the very best sacred-steel music currently available.
