Title Note

Personnel: Tommy Roe (vocals, guitar).

Photographer: Brenda McClearen.

Tommy Roe's Greatest Hits on Onyx Classix is a ten-track collection that looks fishy right from the get-go. "Crimson & Clover," "Sugar Sugar," and "Baby I Love You" were not hits for Roe, and indeed the whole collection is pretty much a rip-off. The songs are re-recorded versions of Roe's big hits (plus the three songs previously mentioned) done in what sounds like the '80s, going by the sound of the drums and the keyboards. Roe's voice itself still sounds very good and it might have been interesting to hear him revisit "Sheila," "Jam Up and Jelly Tight," and "Dizzy" if the musical backing were sympathetic or even interesting. It isn't, however, and you should give this misleadingly packaged disc a wide berth. (This same material has been repackaged and retitled by other unscrupulous record companies, so be vigilant and read the fine print when buying a budget Roe collection.) ~ Tim Sendra
