William "Smokey" Robinson's long career as a writer, singer, producer, and arranger is the stuff of pop history, and a collection like this one, which brings together the key tracks from his 1960s and early-'70s material with the Miracles, with his smooth R&B hits as a solo artist in the later '70s and '80s, really shows what a phenomenal artist Robinson has always been. The classic Miracles hits are here, including "The Tears of a Clown" and "The Tracks of My Tears," as well as Robinson's biggest solo hits, like the lush, irresistible "Cruisin'" from 1979 and his genre-defining "Quiet Storm," which lent its title to a whole new R&B radio format, although it will always be a little jarring to hear the earlier Miracles material next to the smoother solo stuff, even if most of the musical ingredients are the same. At any rate, the biggest and most important sides from Robinson's career are here. ~ Steve Leggett

One you pickup on the spur -- if the price is right -- at a service station for instant gratification on long drives, because it's too skimpy of a compilation for anything else. Only 10 songs, all by the original Miracles, except "Love Machine" led by Billy Griffin, but the version is the short 3:05 radio version, not the lengthy, throbbing LP rendition -- ugggh! The rest represent some of the Miracles' finest moments including "Ooo Baby Baby," "You Really Got a Hold On Me," "Mickey's Monkey," and "Tracks of My Tears," but you can find these and more on meatier compilations. ~ Andrew Hamilton
