Title Note

This ten-song assortment that is part of Capitol's 10 Best series includes six of Juice Newton's Top 40 pop singles, leaving out her lowest charting hit in "Tell Her No," a Zombies hit from 1965. Her three-part recipe of folk, country, and rock comprises her better material, found here with the number two Billboard single "Queen of Hearts," recorded two years earlier by Dave Edmunds, and the subtle "Angel of the Morning," which shows off Newton's melodious voice. One of her most vibrant tunes, led by the friendly jangle of acoustic guitar, is included here as well with 1982's "Love's Been a Little Bit Hard on Me." The sweetness of "Break It to Me Gently" was both a pop and country hit thanks to its accommodating radio-friendly formula, and "It's a Heartache," a charted single for Bonnie Tyler in 1978, is sung in a much more delicate fashion by Newton. While this brief dose of Juice Newton's most popular efforts may suffice for some, there is still plenty of material that can be found on more thorough collections. Her country material, such as "You Make Me Want to Make You Mine," "I'm So Hurt," "Old Flame," and "Both to Each Other," to name just a few, all reached number one positions on the country & western charts during the mid-'80s and are absent from this short set. For a meager, inexpensive collection of Newton's pop hits, this disc will do the trick, but like most hits compilations, it's short and suffers from subpar sound. ~ Mike DeGagne
