Title Note

Personnel: Erroll Garner (piano); Leonard Gaskin, John Simmons (bass); Charlie Smith, Harold Wing (drums).

Recorded in New York, New York on July 20, 1949 & May 12, 1950. Originally released on Atlantic (1227). Includes liner notes by Whitney Balliett and Bob Porter.

Erroll Garner recorded these great sides for Atlantic in 1949-50, right before the move to Columbia for a long, successful tenure. (Producer Mitch Miller once dubbed Garner the "iron man" of the record business since he was able to lay down any number of release-ready perfect takes in a standard three-hour session.) Though he couldn't read a note, Garner had the ear of a Mozart. Indeed, most of his interpretations are, in effect, note-perfect transcriptions of the big-band tunes he heard on the radio in his youth. It all would have been idiot-savant-like if it weren't for the deeper currents of fantasy present in just about all Garner's improvisations. Some of the strikingly lyrical interludes on these Atlantic cuts--"Flamingo," "Skylark"--are all the more striking since he wasn't really striving to be beautiful exactly, just capturing on wax an average set you might have heard on 52nd Street any night of the week.
