Product note

Released in conjunction with a home video release. Includes "My Happiness," which Elvis performed as a teenager for his mother's birthday.
Tracks 1-10, 12 and 13 are mono, the rest are stereo.
Unlike other performers of the early rock era, Elvis is as closely associated with his many television and film appearances as he is with his records. To capitalize on the wealth of rare and interesting video footage of the King, in 1990 Buena Vista released a two-video set called Elvis: The Great Performances. This included many of Presley's early television appearances, some later stage and studio performances, home movie footage, and film documenting major events in his life, including his Army induction and marriage. At the same time, RCA released an accompanying CD called THE GREAT PERFORMANCES, which includes most of the harder-to-find performances seen on the videos.
The album begins with the 1953 acetate of "My Happiness" that Presley, then an unknown, cut at Sun Studios as a gift to his mother (it later earned Elvis an audition at Sun). Also included are 1956 performances on the Dorsey Brothers' show, the Steve Allen Show, the Milton Berle Show, and Ed Sullivan's Talk of the Town. Most of the later tracks are studio recordings. THE GREAT PERFORMANCES is a nice collection and a good companion to the videos, although subsequent RCA releases have made its rarities more readily available than they were in 1990.
