Review

Uncut (p.117) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "The opener, from Jack Rose, wonderfully evokes the deft style of Fahey's early Takoma years..."

Title Note

While a collection of John Fahey cover songs might seem like a troubling starting point for a tribute album--his music is less about the songs per se than about the virtuosity and spirit of his performances--the artists compiled for THE GREAT KOONAKLASTER SPEAKS: A JOHN FAHEY CELEBRATION get away with the implausible and celebrate Fahey accordingly. Honoring both his chops and his oddities, Table of the Elements cast a wide net to reel in some great guitarists (Jack Rose and Ben Vida), some out-there iconoclasts (Michael Hurley and the No Neck Blues Band), and some who are a little of both (Sir Richard Bishop and R. Keenan Lawler).

Most performers stay largely true to the Fahey originals, while others put their own spins on the...er...Koonaklassics, most notably the No Neck Blues band, who take "Overcome" into Sun Ra's orbit, and Sir Richard Bishop, whose feedback version of "Hood River Lap Dance" borders on orchestral. New Zealand lo-fi master Pumice contributes two stellar tracks, "Ceremonial Knives" and "Crossing the Susquehanna River Bridge," to close the collection. While hardly essential--neophytes should skip right to the source--THE GREAT KOONAKLASTER SPEAKS is an enjoyable tribute to a modern music god, worth tracking down for Fahey freaks.
