For this Latin pop superstar, a greatest hits album offers a chance to taste some of the sweetest fruits from the healthy vine that is the Shakira catalog of albums. Things kick off appropriately enough with "Estoy Aqui," which also opens Shakira's 1996 album PIES DESCALZOS. It's a powerful opener, and its mix of acoustic guitars, pop chorus, and prominent dance beat speaks volumes about the nature of the singer's work. Another important aspect of Shakira's sound is represented strongly by "Si Te Vas" from DONDE ESTAN LOS LADRONES? Redolent of Alanis Morissette with its vocal swoops and pointed rock rhythms, it showcases the angry-young-woman side of Shakira. Of course, the monster 2001 hit "Whenever, Wherever" from LAUNDRY SERVICE would render any Shakira compilation incomplete by its absence, but this disc isn't just about the hits; it lets listeners experience all the shadings of which this multi-faceted artist is capable.
