John Scofield Artist Snapshot:

A post-bopper who emerged from his early-'80s Miles Davis stint brandishing the funk, Scofield has a well-earned place in the pantheon of contemporary jazz guitarists. He has a distinctive, edgy sound that draws on both rock and jazz. His playing seamlessly combines post-Coltrane harmonics and a deep passion for the blues.

Title Note

Personnel: John Scofield (electric guitar), Randy Brecker (flugelhorn), Jim Pugh (trombone), John Clark (French horn), Bill Frisell (electric & acoustic guitars), Charlie Haden (bass), Joey Baron (drums).

Recorded at the Power Station, New York in December, 1991.

All songs written by John Scofield.

Electric guitarist John Scofield has excelled in a variety of jazz contexts, from crackling funk to moody avant-garde, both on his own and under leaders Miles Davis, Gary Burton, and Billy Cobham. An inspired session from the early 1990s, GRACE UNDER PRESSURE is a "summit meeting" of significant jazz talents. Scofield's cohorts here include the outstanding jazz guitar innovator Bill Frisell, acoustic bass legend Charlie Haden, and drummer Joey Baron--all of whom are capable of being both explosive and tastefully subtle. Above all, the interaction between the two six-string wizards, Frisell and Scofield, is outstanding.
