Album Description

Daevid Allen is best known as the leader of the wild '70s psychedelic/fusion/prog outfit Gong. GOOD MORNING was his first album after leaving the group, and it marks a drastic change of direction. Abandoning Gong's mind-bending psychedelia and jazzy virtuosity, he concentrates on a gentler, more acoustic, song-based approach.
Recorded at his Majorcan home with the help of his partner Gilli Smyth and the Spanish ensemble Euterpe, GOOD MORNING is nevertheless consistent with Allen's vision by virtue of the lyrics' hippie utopianism and the light-hearted airiness that always kept true pretense at bay. Various acoustic stringed instruments combine with subtle, atmospheric keyboards and Allen's endearingly reedy, Robin Williamson-ish voice on songs meant to promote the healing of the human spirit. Touches of good ol' Gong spaciness are nonetheless present, and Gong men Mike Howlett and Pierre Moerlen contribute to "Wise Man in Your Heart," which sounds for all the world like a reworked outtake from Gong's final Allen-led album YOU.
