Review

Mojo (Publisher) (p.109) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "As adept at country music as he is at samba or barbershop quartet singing, this may all sound wilfully eclectic but actually hangs together, bound up by May's showman-like vocals."
Paste (magazine) (p.54) - "[F]urther inspection reveals a charming and often hilarious songwriter who waxes delightful throughout these dozen tracks."
Clash (magazine) (p.97) - "'Howard is a ukulele/slide guitar-led unrockstar-ish song about a life on the road, while May's warm, soulful voice and the Beach Boy harmonies lend it a poignant, lamenting quality."

Title Note

Personnel: Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele (vocals, ukulele); Jesse M.T. Toussaint (guitar); Gerald Menke (pedal steel guitar); Sandy Lane (violin); Jeff Callaway (trumpet); Steven Konrad Bevilaqua, Jr. (bass guitar); Michael Bible (percussion).

Issued in 2009 on the Animal Collective-founded Paw Tracks label, the debut of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele finds the Mississippi-based performer leading his ensemble through a lounge-ready set unabashedly influenced by the quirky side of the 1960s international pop scene. Largely inspired by Lee Hazlewood and Serge Gainsbourg, May crafts breezy, highly melodic tunes that evoke a simpler time, as evinced on "Meet Me in the Garden" and "Girls on the Square."
