Review

"GOLDENGROVE is a beautifully written record of a summer suspended between youth and adulthood, between death and life, a tender, touching account of how one survives in a world that is, by its nature, incomplete."

Synopsis

A young girl faces the consequences of sudden loss after the death of her sister. As her parents drift toward their own risky consolations, thirteen-year-old Nico is left alone to grope toward understanding and clarity, falling into a seductive, dangerous relationship with her sister's enigmatic boyfriend. Over one haunted summer, Nico must face that life-changing moment when children realize their parents can no longer help them. She learns about the power of art, of time and place, the mystery of loss and recovery. But for all the darkness at the novel's heart, the narrative itself is radiant with the lightness of summer and charged by the restless sexual tension of teenage life.

Publisher's note

Grieving independently after the drowning death of her sister, thirteen-year-old Nico falls into a seductive and dangerous relationship with her sister's enigmatic boyfriend throughout the course of a summer during which she realizes that she has moved beyond the help of her parents. Reprint. A best-selling novel. 100,000 first printing.

Annotation

Nico is a plump teenager who adores her charismatic older sister, Margaret, and she wants nothing more than to tag along with Margaret and her boyfriend, Aaron. But when Margaret drowns in a nearby lake at the start of summer, Nico finds herself in the depths of grief without the help of her parents, who are too devastated to guide her through mourning. Nico and Aaron's bonding over their mutual loss leads to eerie territory for the young protagonist, but all the roiling emotions of adolescence gradually lead Nico to tender reflections on human resilience in the wake of tragedy.
