The precision and invention DJ/producer Scott Herren applies to his work as Prefuse 73 translates to his work as the quieter, downtempo-oriented Savath & Savalas. GOLDEN POLLEN, Herren's fourth release as Savath & Savalas, is one of his finest, blending ambient sounds, layered samples, and gentle rhythms. The album is particularly notable for the presence of Herren's voice, which graces most of the tracks, and vocal appearances by the likes of Jose Gonzalez. The mood of the album is subdued and evocative, with underpinnings of melancholy, but Herren's usual wizardry as a sonic architect is in full evidence.
