Former Soul Coughing leader Mike Doughty continues his eclectic solo career with his most varied record yet. GOLDEN DELICIOUS is the most pop-oriented album of Doughty's career, with an uncharacteristically straightforward and harder rocking sound on songs such as "Fort Hood" and "I Just Want the Girl in the Blue Dress To Keep On Dancing." Doughty's knack for oddball poetry and unusual arrangements continues on the songs "More Bacon Than the Pan Can Handle" and "Like A Luminous Girl," keeping GOLDEN DELICIOUS from truly sounding like a bid for commercial attention. Still, the best songs here, including "Nectarine" and "Navigating by the Stars at Night," are Mike Doughty at his most immediately accessible.
