Golden Classics provides a succinct offering of Roy Hamilton's finest moments, showcasing his blend of dramatic, gospel-informed vibrato and classical training that would prove influential to both Sam Cooke and Jackie Wilson. His first number one hit, "You'll Never Walk Alone," stayed on the R&B charts for five months and remained at number one for almost two full months. Other hits followed, including another number one, "Unchained Melody," which returned to the charts twice more, both times as a hit for the Righteous Brothers. The other chart hits here follow a similar formula of orchestral balladry, but the rest of the tracks here clear up any notion of Hamilton being a monochrome crooner; both "A Great Romance" and "You're Gonna Need Magic" present a vigorous and, of course, well-polished R&B singer. ~ Wade Kergan
