Grover Washington Jr. Artist Snapshot:

A gifted saxophonist who frequently crossed over into R&B/pop territory, Grover Washington Jr. hit levels of mainstream success rarely achieved by jazz artists, particularly on his thoughtful 1981 single, "Just the Two of Us," with Bill Withers. Generally pegged as a smooth-jazz artist, Washington often revealed considerable funk tendencies, as on `74's MISTER MAGIC and `75's FEELS SO GOOD. Though he passed away at the relatively young age of 56 in 1999, Washington left behind an impressive recorded legacy that spans three decades.

Title Note

Personnel include: Grover Washington Jr. (saxophone); Patti LaBelle, Phyllis Hyman, Bill Cosby, Bill Withers (vocals); Orchestra of St. Luke's.

Recording information: 1971 - 2001.

GOLD packs two discs full of the best moments Grover Washington Jr., put to tape, and makes for a great introduction to the smooth jazz saxophonist, as well as an impressive retrospective of his too-short career (he died of a sudden heart attack at 56). Disc one concentrates on instrumentals, beginning with two groovy remakes of Marvin Gaye tunes from Washington Jr.'s 1972 debut INNER CITY BLUES, and continuing with several of his own compositions (such as the funky, laid-back gem "Mister Magic").

Disc two includes pop and jazz covers ( Bob Marley's "Jamming" and Rahsaan Roland Kirk's "Bright Moments" are stand-outs), but focuses more on Washington Jr.'s duets, including "Be Mine (Tonight)" with Grady Tate, "The Best is Yet to Come" with Patti Labelle, and "Just the Two of Us" with Bill Withers, Washington Jr.'s highest charting single. The artist's sinuous tone and ability to merge soul, light funk, jazz, pop, and easy listening is impressive, and never less than soothing to the ears.
