The Gap Band Artist Snapshot:

Although they got a bit of a slow start, Tulsa, Oklahoma's the Gap Band became one of the most popular funk/R&B outfits of the early-to-mid 1980s. The band relied heavily on synth-based, hands-in-the-air party jams of the P-Funk variety, with the occasional bedroom ballad tossed in for good measure--an approach that as quietly permeated much of the R&B and hip-hop that developed in its wake. The younger generation got the opportunity to show its respect for the band when lead singer Charlie Wilson released his 2005 solo album, CHARLIE, LAST NAME WILSON, which featured a bevy of noted guest performers, Snoop Dogg and R. Kelly among them.

The Gap Band were one of several acts in the late 1970s and early '80s to built on Parliament's synth-driven, low-end funk, and their string of singles testifies to the strength of their formula. Like nearly every installment in the GOLD series, the Gap Band's is beautifully selected and assembled, giving a definitive and near-comprehensive overview of the band's career. From the band's first hit, 1979's "Shake" to their material from the early '90s, GOLD packs 32 tracks of hard electro-funk and simmering R&B ballads into two discs, including stone-cold classics like "I Don't Believe You Want to Get Up and Dance (Oops Up Side Your Head)" and "You Dropped a Bomb on Me." Those seeking just the hits might opt for a single-disc collection, but GOLD is a thorough, and excellent, package.
