Review

Rolling Stone (p.95) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "Spencer is a master of the offhandedly irreverent blues move, turning riffs like 'Crazy Pritty Baby' into prime perversion."
Entertainment Weekly (p.78) - "[With] garage-blues nuggets....'She Baby' walks the line between country and rock, while 'Crazy Pritty Baby' would not sound out of place on oldies radio."
No Depression (p.106) - "[A] record that drips gloriously greasy, reverb-drenched rockabilly sleaze."

Title Note

Heavy Trash: Jon Spencer, Matt Verta-Ray (various instruments).

Additional personnel: Dallas Good (guitar); The Great Nalna, Travis Good (baritone guitar); Anrew 'Strippy Raff (saxophone); Daniel Collas (organ); Kim Kix, Simon Chardiet, Sean Dean (upright bass); Yebo, Mike Belitsky, Phil Hernandez (drums); Daniel Jodocy (percussion); The Sadies.

Though he's stomping around the same backyard, old dog Jon Spencer seems to have learned some new tricks during his time in Heavy Trash, his retro-minded roots combo with former Speedball Baby member Matt Verta-Ray. While GOING WAY OUT (2007), the band's second album, contains doses of the trashy grit and wild-man blues of Spencer's earlier outfits, Pussy Galore and the Blues Explosion (see "I Want Oblivion" and the title track), Spencer gives fuller indulgence to his roots predilections than ever before, unabashedly embracing the switchblade beat and reverbed croon of his punk forefathers in the rockabilly outposts of yesteryear.

Album Review

The bastard cousin to Spencer's genre-demolishing Blues Explosion, Heavy Trash features Speedball Baby's guitar brawler and producer extraordinaire Matt Verta-Ray in a project that drinks down the best of roots, R&B and rock-a-billy. Going Way Out with Heavy Trash, the second offering from these kings of buzz saw guitars and late night incantations, was recorded in three different countries and features an international cast of musicians - Canada's the Sadies, members of Denmark's Tremolo Beer Gut and Powersolo, and New York City's Simon Chardiet and Phil Hernandez. Heavy Trash is what the name implies - filthy and hard - the soundtrack to the strung-out road trip from which there can be no return.

Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray are back at it again. This time around its even more of that old rock n roll feel. 50s sound, but it does not disappoint. Go get the Pomade, your white t-shirt, and hop on the nearest boxcar with this at the end of your hobo stick. "She Baby" and "Pure Gold" are where its at.
