Review

Audio Magazine (6/94, p.94) - "...the legendary drummer shows plenty of taste and finesse leading and backing his septet..."

Title Note

Personnel: Elvin Jones (drums); Ravi Coltrane (soprano & tenor saxophones); Javon Jackson (tenor saxophone); Nicholas Payton (trumpet); Kent Jordan (flute, piccolo); Willie Pickens (piano); Brad Jones (acoustic bass).

Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on October 15 & 16, 1992.

Over the years Elvin Jones has proved to be not only one of the preeminent jazz drummers in the world, but also a fine bandleader. On this 1992 Enja release, we hear the drumming master performing with the young lions of the 1990s.

The music on GOING HOME is a kind of hybrid of post-bop and advanced hard bop. The album's opener, "The Shell Game," is a composition by Jones himself that harks back to the hard bop edge of Coltrane's early '60s work. However, the ballad "You've Changed" moves in still another direction. Javon Jackson's subtle tenor playing, combined with Jones's smooth brush work and Willie Pickens' lush piano makes this song a real gem. Finally, "April 8th" highlights Jones's drumming prowess and power; his solo at the end of the tune is as impassioned and skillful as it gets.
