Ride Artist Snapshot:

Formed in 1988 by Oxford art college students, the influential quartet Ride was signed to Alan McGee's now-legendary Creation label based on the strength of their live set. Combining distortion-drenched guitars with melodic vocals, frontmen Mark Gardener and Andy Bell helped shape the "shoegazer" sound that was pioneered by My Bloody Valentine. While Ride's first two albums were largely well received and defined the band's identity, subsequent releases found them experimenting with poppier sounds and losing their audience. After the group's demise in 1996, band members pursued various musical projects, with Bell eventually joining Oasis as bass player.

Review

Q (4/92, p.82) - 4 Stars - Excellent - "..powers along with hummable harmonic pop tunes, layered guitars and neo-psychedelic drumming to maintain Ride's place as the link between The Monkees and Jesus & Mary Chain.."
Musician (6/92, p.98) - "..an earnest salute to the guitar...a dazzling flourish...Big chords and crisp licks pour forth in an endless stream.."

Title Note

All songs written by Ride.

Ride set themselves a tough task by having to follow up their excellent full-length debut, NOWHERE, an album that still stands as one of the finest examples of Britain's shoegazer movement. Fortunately, the band rose to the task. While not quite as immediately striking or hypnotic as NOWHERE, GOING BLANK AGAIN is a charmingly different kettle of fish.

Of course, there is plenty of the band's trademark epic sonic play, including oceans of layered guitars shot through with distortion and effects, shimmering psychedelic textures, and thumping bass and drums. But GOING BLANK AGAIN is much brighter and more pop-oriented than its predecessor, with songs like "Twisterella" and "Not Fazed" making ample use of chiming guitar lines and catchy melodic hooks. While the dark-and-gloomy, drone-fixated shoegazer fans may disparage the record, Ride's sophomore release shows the band building on their sound while polishing their popcraft.
