Pianist Ramsey Lewis cut the sessions for GOIN' LATIN in 1966, shortly after he'd crossed over to pop audiences with highly accessible mid-`60s albums such as THE IN CROWD. As its title indicates, GOIN' LATIN features Latin rhythms, and Lewis blends samba, bossa nova, mambo, and boogaloo all into his stylistic palette here. Most of the program consists of Lewis's adaptations of then familiar tunes, including "Lara's Theme" (from DR. ZHIVAGO), Vince Guaraldi's "Cast Your Fate to the Wind," and the traditional "Down By the River Side." Sweet string arrangements push some of these tracks toward easy listening, but even jazz purists may be charmed by Lewis's mellow, cocktail-hour take on Latin grooves.
