Product note

Carla Bley Big Band: Carla Bley (piano); Roger Jannotta (soprano & alto saxophones, flute); Wolfgang Puschnig (alto saxophone); Andy Sheppard, Jerry Underwood (tenor saxophone); Julian Arguelles (baritone saxophone); Lew Soloff, Guy Barker, Claude Deppa (trumpet); Gary Valente, Pete Beachill, Chris Dean (trombone); Richard Henry (bass trombone); Karen Mantler (harmonica, organ); Steve Swallow (bass); Dennis Mackrel (drums).
Recorded live at Chiesa San Francesco Al Prato, Umbria Jazz, Perugia, Italy from July 19-21, 1996.
Carla Bley has explored themes ranging from death (Gary Burton's GENUINE TONG FUNERAL) to music boxes (MUSIQUE MECHANIQUE). This time out, the prevailing theme is religious experience. Bley has never been one to beat around the bush when naming her albums. The title tells the whole tale. There is reverence, spirituality, mournfulness, and celebration--sometimes all in one piece ("Exaltation/Religious Experience/Major"). But by no stretch of the imagination is this a religious album.
First and foremost, CHURCH is a Carla Bley album and is therefore full of her characteristic wit, inquisitiveness, and beauty. When Bley adds "Big" to the name of her ensemble, she means it. 17 players become a part of Bley's musical world on CHURCH. The album was recorded live, at several locations throughout Europe and America. But, in keeping with the high sonic standards of all ECM-related releases, you'd hardly notice it if not for the applause at the end of each piece.
