Gershon Kingsley was an early adopter of the Moog synthesizer, working extensively with the instrument's inventor, Robert Moog, but his main claim to fame lies in his 1969 composition of the original version of the popular synthesizer hit, "Popcorn." One of a series of reissues of "space age bachelor pad Jewish music" by the Reboot Stereophonic label, GOD IS A MOOG showcases Kingsley's more serious side, namely his religious compositions for the instrument, including "Shabbat for Today," a Saturday evening service, and a similarly reworked Passover seder called "The Fifth Cup." The Moog's layered, often otherworldly tones are ideally suited to religious music, and Kingsley's pieces often suggest later ambient works.
