This adaptation of James Baldwin's acclaimed novel follows three decades in the life of a southern Black Baptist preacher, and the effect of his behavior on his two sons.
The story begins as Gabriel, a married preacher, has an affair with a temptress -- a union that leads to the birth of an illegitimate son. But when the child dies years later, the event transforms Gabriel into a cold, angry man. He decides to start life anew, and moves his family to Harlem.
In his new home, Gabriel grows even harder and more rigid. Unable to deal with his bottled up rage, he continually abuses his family and forces them to conform to his own beliefs. This affects his two sons in different ways: Roy becomes a punk headed for a life of trouble, while the other, John, develops into an introverted, talented writer. But will John break free from his father and pursue his dreams? Or will he be caught forever in Gabriel's stifling grip?
