Publisher's note

GO AHEAD JOHN, takes the reader on a journey through a myriad of musical climates; from the drug-fuelled sixties, through the heady days of jazz rock and ethnic fusion in the seventies, to McLaughlin's re-establishment in the nineties as a grand master of the jazz guitar. A writer with an intuitive and often highly original take on his subjects, as well as an extensive knowledge of both jazz and rock, Paul Stump eloquently draws together the various strands that have made McLaughlin a diverse and fascinating modern jazz virtuoso.

Annotation

One of the most widely admired jazz-rock guitarists of his day, John McLaughlin was born in the small Yorkshire town of Kirk Sandall in 1942. He immersed himself in music, in particular jazz, from an early age, turning professional at 15, and moving to London soon afterwards. McLaughlin became a fixture on the 1960s session scene, making anonymous contributions to recordings by artists like the Rolling Stones and David Bowie. His first break came in 1969 with the release of EXTRAPOLATION, a quantum leap for the guitarist and for British jazz. GO AHEAD JOHN, Paul Stump's detailed and astute biography of perhaps Britain's finest jazz guitarist, reveals a musician of ever-widening horizons whose career stretches from groundbreaking 1970s recordings with jazz legend Miles Davis and the virtuoso Mahavishnu Orchestra to later 1990s performances with more spiritually-based bands like Shakti and the Free Spirits. Stump's assessments of McLaughlin's various projects over the years are consistently intriguing, while the author rarely allows his admiration of his subject to cloud his critical judgment. GO AHEAD JOHN is a fine introduction to the work of this pioneering musician.
