Publisher's note

"Global Gender Issues in the New Millennium" connects the inequalities between and among women and men with the world politics of power, security, economics, and ecology. Through historical and theoretical analysis, empirical data, visual imagery, and other narrative techniques, the authors alert us to gendered divisions of power, violence, labor, and resources. They show how the position of men and women and the power of gender relate to issues such as global governance, militarization, ethnic nationalism, global economic restructuring, and environmental degradation. This new third edition explores how global conflict, inequalities, and resource depletion have widened and deepened, particularly in the post-9/11 period, while at the same time gender policymaking (quotas, gender mainstreaming, and the advancing of human rights) has increased. The authors focus on this apparent contradiction-the higher level of attention to gender and human rights in a time of fierce military conflict, global inequality, and ecological crisis-but also address how the analyses of gender and the deconstruction of gender, race, class, sexuality, and nation can be used to order the world in terms of identities, ideologies, structures, and policies. The book emphasizes that gender issues affect both men and women and that they can be co-opted, denied, and used to justify unjust global governance, global security, and global political economy. The authors also examine the challenges of forging transnational solidarities to ungender world politics, scholarship, and practice.
