Annotation

After making their live debut in early 1980s Los Angeles as the unpromisingly named Anthym, the Red Hot Chili Peppers rapidly evolved into one of the most successful California post-punk bands via recordings like their 1985 FREAKY STYLEY album, produced by George Clinton, and 1991's BLOOD SUGAR SEX MAGIC, produced by Rick Rubin. Despite the loss of their guitarist Hillell Slovak to a heroin overdose, and the later departure of their first drummer Jack Irons, with the addition of guitarist John Frusciante and drummer Chad Smith the band developed an aggressive, commercial sound that propelled them into the forefront of the late-'90s alternative scene. GIVE IT AWAY, Rob Fitzpatrick's well-researched survey of the band and their material, traces their early beginnings (Grand Rapids, Michigan-born singer Anthony Kiedis received his liberal Hollywood education from his father, a well-known scenester and bit-part actor) and the genesis of later songs like "Under the Bridge," a ballad that's also a glimpse of Kiedis's life as a heroin addict. Featuring a wealth of fascinating background material, GIVE IT AWAY is a valuable addition to the Chili Peppers' chronicles.
