What's an Astrud Gilberto compilation without "The Girl from Ipanema"? And what's a chancy budget-line collection without an embarrassing re-recording of the only hit in attendance? Brilliant's ten-track Gilberto collection includes a batch of '70s tracks from the Brazilian chanteuse, leading off with Vince Montana, Jr.'s recasting of the title track. Also included are a bare few interesting tracks, including "Far Away" with a vocal and trumpet solo by Chet Baker. The same material was previously repeated on identically titled collections from Prime Cuts, Bellaphon, and Dressed to Kill. ~ John Bush

This Synergy compilation of Astrud Gilberto's 1970s work for Creed Taylor's CTI label is identical to many others on various labels like Dressed To Kill, Brilliant and Hallmark -- whose cover is even duplicated here. And don't be fooled by the inclusion of the title track, it is a '70s funk-jazz remake of the bossa nova classic. No matter the price and the great sound quality, musically this is one to avoid. ~ Thom Jurek
