Review

Rolling Stone (11/27/03, p.92) - 3.5 stars out of 5 - "It's easy to compare Mark Kozelek to Neil Young but the horse that Kozelek rides is much more sad and wild than it is crazy....Kozelek's squalling dirges turn despair into a kind of elemental beauty..."
Q (p.136) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "[A} surprisingly uplifting record, Kozelek relaxing into a new emotional suppleness as he mixes songs about boxers with an a romantic ear for the rhythms and poetry of American life."
Q (3/04, p.113) - 4 stars out of 5 - "With Kozelek's compelling ache of a voice to the fore, his star deserves to wax anew."
Uncut (3/04, p.94) - 4 stars out of 5 - "Kozelek has found a way of keeping the engulfing intensity of his early work while expanding his range."
Magnet (11/03, p.108) - "...It's a gorgeous record brimming with unhurried songs...When songs are this transporting, you can only hope they'll last forever..."
Mojo (Publisher) (2/04, p.101) - 4 stars out of 5 - "[Kozelek has] never sounded more inspired, achieving a rich balance of haunting atmosphere and twangy grit."

Title Note

Sun Kil Moon: Mark Kozelek, Geoff Stanfield, Anthony Koustos, Tim Mooney.

Principally recorded at Toast, Hyde Street Studios, San Francisco, California.

This reissue of GHOSTS OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY includes a bonus disc containing unreleased tracks.

After 2001's OLD RAMON (which had actually been recorded years earlier), singer/songwriter Mark Kozelek retired the Red House Painters name, and his next non-solo outing, 2003's GHOST OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY, was credited to Sun Kil Moon. (Maybe he got tired of being filed next to the Red Hot Chili Peppers in record stores?) While in many ways the album is a continuation of the sound on the Painters' SONGS FOR A BLUE GUITAR, here Kozelek streamlines the material, refraining from extended six-string freak-outs and painfully confessional lyrics, in favor of sharply honed rock-inflected tunes and gorgeous, string-laden tracks. The result is one of the most directly affecting and immediately appealing records of Kozelek's career, and those intrigued by, but wary of, the Red House Painters will likely be pleasantly surprised with Sun Kil Moon's GHOSTS OF THE GREAT HIGHWAY.

Album Review

Caldo Verde Records will re-issue Sun Kil Moon's Ghosts of the Great Highway. Originally released in 2003, the album received superlative reviews, moved quickly to #1 on college radio and has become one of singer-songwriter Mark Kozelek's most loved and best selling albums in a 13 album career. This reissue will include re-worked packaging and a 6-song bonus CD containing two versions of Leonard Bernstein's "Somewhere," alternative versions of "Carry Me Ohio" and "Salvador Sanchez," a radio recording of "Gentle Moon" recorded in Portugal, and the previously unreleased instrumental "Arrival," which was recorded for the movie The Girl Next Door. 2 Disc Digipak.
