A.C. Newman Artist Snapshot:

Best known as the primary singer/songwriter in the indie-pop supergroup the New Pornographers (also featuring Neko Case and Destroyer's Dan Bejar), A.C. (Allan Carl) Newman occasionally steps out on his own, as heard on 2004's THE SLOW WONDER and `09's GET GUILTY. While Newman's solo work doesn't stray too far from NP's punchy, pop-savvy aesthetic, it allows the Canadian native (formerly of the alt-rock act Zumpano) to stretch out stylistically, and operate free of his day job's more collaborative environment.

Review

Rolling Stone (p.70) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "[L]ike all Newman records, it shows off his smarts and maintains a strong hook quotient..."
Spin (p.92) - 3.5 stars out of 5 -- "Here, the Canadian power-pop ace unleashes another battery of hooks with blasts of vocal harmonies and dabs of organ."
Entertainment Weekly (p.99) - "Newman ratchets down the excess while retaining his talent for killer, off-kilter melodies." -- Grade: B+
Q (Magazine) (p.108) - 4 stars out of 5 -- "GET GUILTY bursts with dazzling tunes and -- for him -- relatively simple arrangements, albeit ones filled with strings, horns, woodwind and layers of harmony..."
Blender (Magazine) (p.65) - 3 stars out of 5 -- "[H]e has an eye for the goofy mantra and a love of the gnarled, punchy guitar line that injects restless fun into a genre that is too often insular."
Paste (magazine) (p.54) - "[A] baroque-pop gem, on which he displays remarkable tonal control via crafty arrangement..."

Title Note

Personnel: A.C. Newman (vocals, guitar, keyboards, percussion); Nicole Atkins, Kori Gardner Hammel, Jason Hammel (vocals); Tara Szczygielski (violin); Pamela Quinn (flute); Brendan Ryan (accordion, trumpet, piano); J.B. Flatt (recorder); Paula Henderson (baritone saxophone); Eric Heveron-Smith (trombone).

Audio Mixer: Phil Palazzolo.

The New Pornographers' CHALLENGERS was an atypically calm and reflective set for the hyperactive Canadian popsters. At the same time, bandleader A.C. Newman's second solo album moves away from the singer-songwriter delicacy of his solo debut into a more electrically charged and spunky sound closer in spirit to his band's trademark literate power pop. "There Are Maybe Ten Or Twelve" starts the album like Paul McCartney's take on one of Tom Waits's twisted sea chanteys, and the album continues down that eclectic path throughout. Highlights include "The Palace At Four a.m." and "The Collected Works."
