Shonen Knife: Naoko Yamano (vocals, guitar); Atsuko Yamano (vocals, 6-string bass, drums).

Japan's premiere punk-pop outfit, Shonen Knife, have been plying their brand of whimsical, buoyant bubble-gum rock since the early 1980s, and 2006's GENKI SHOCK finds the group still going strong. Thanks to being touted by U.S. indie icons like Sonic Youth and Nirvana, Shonen Knife began to garner clout stateside in the '90s, and the English-language version of GENKI SHOCK does nothing to diminish the band's hard-won cult status. The album features more of Shonen Knife's clean, guitar-driven sound--a clear indulgence of Naoko Yamano and Atsuko Yamano's profuse love of the Ramones--while the band's playful, sing-song melodies and goofy song titles ("Broccoli Man," "Giant Kitty") are still firmly in place.
