Title Note

Although Garfield: The Movie was ill-conceived, its soundtrack -- which was released to tie in with the film's DVD release -- doesn't fare nearly as badly as the movie that inspired it. Although its cat, dog, and friendship-themed songs are more than a little obvious, most of the actual music on the album ranges from strong (Matthew Sweet's "Cats vs. Dogs," the Stray Cats' "Stray Cat Strut") to classic (James Brown's "I Got You [I Feel Good]," Elton John's "Honky Cat," Elvis Presley's "Hound Dog"). Though it's hardly a creative stretch to compile tracks such as Tom Jones' "What's New Pussycat?," Squirrel Nut Zippers' "Fat Cat Keeps Getting Fatter," Rufus Thomas' "Walking the Dog," and George Clinton's "Atomic Dog," the fun results justify the album's concept. All Too Much's "More Than a Friend" and the Baha Men's "Holla" aren't quite up to the par of the rest of the soundtrack, but overall, Garfield's mix of furry-themed oldies and not-so-oldies is enjoyable for both kids and parents -- much more so, unfortunately, than Garfield: The Movie itself was. ~ Heather Phares
